Creative Community:

When Remote Goes Rural

Meet Business Creative Justin Kiser.

Originally from Wichita, Justin’s family relocated to Leoti, in western Kansas, when he was in middle school. There, he found a passion for farming, and he balanced school, sports and work. After high school, Justin made his way back to Wichita where he graduated from Wichita State University with a business degree. After working in the banking and lending industries for four years and craving a change, he took on a new challenge at in the Creative Community at Malibu Creative. Now, Justin is responsible for communication with employees and contractors, managing client projects and keeping the office running.

And if you’ve emailed or talked to Justin over the past week, chances are he responded to you or handled your request in between turns on a combine.

Change of Scenery

In May this year, Justin got a call from one of his brothers that they’d need help with harvest this summer, so back to Leoti Justin went. The past ten days he’s been working double time – handling Malibu projects from a MacBook in the buddy seat of a combine while moving from field to field with the cutting crew.

During the COVID-19 stay-home order earlier this year, the whole Malibu team spent nearly six weeks working from home, and Justin attributes that time with boosting his confidence in his remote-working abilities.

“I was excited to be able to go back to something I hadn’t done in a few years, but I knew there were a lot of Malibu projects that would need my attention.”

Since being back in Leoti, Justin’s helped plan a couple of video shoots, perform maintenance on client websites and even helped launch a new site while waiting out a rainstorm.

Going Remote

We, like many other people and businesses, have recently tried and experimented with various forms of communication. Although it’s been a challenge, for us it’s been a welcome one. We have grown and been stretched in ways we couldn’t have anticipated. But we’ve also become closer as a team, developed our communication plans and deepened our individual skill sets.

And, as thankful as we are for technology that allows us to literally work from anywhere, we credit the passion our team shares for our clients and our work with keeping us going the past few months.

How has going remote helped you and your team adapt? We want to hear your stories about challenges you’ve been overcoming!
